An antique Swiss Black Forest-style jewelry or keepsake box, hand carved from richly patinated wood and dating to the late 19th century.
The shaped rectangular casket rests on four deeply carved scrolling foliate feet. Floral and leaf motifs decorate the lid and all four sides, while the top is surmounted by a dramatic three-dimensional bird with outstretched wings resting among carved branches and foliage. A small keyhole remains at the front.
Condition is consistent with considerable age. There are numerous old insect or woodworm holes throughout, surface wear, and visible losses and previous repairs around the carved bird and foliage. Please review all photographs closely. It measures 8"W x 5"D x 5½"H
