Antique 19th Century French Beauvaisis Salt Glazed Stoneware Tobacco Jar with Female Figural Relief

A richly decorated 19th-century French tobacco jar attributed to the Beauvaisis region. The cylindrical stoneware vessel features a warm brown salt glaze and an elaborate series of molded female figures surrounded by grape clusters, vine leaves and scrolling foliage.

One scene depicts a classically draped woman holding a cup, while the other figures continue the jar’s Bacchic theme of wine, abundance and revelry. The applied relief decoration and naturally varied glaze are characteristic of traditional Beauvaisis stoneware. It measures 5"⌀ x 6½" H

This vessel was originally made as a tobacco jar and would have had a fitted pewter lid. The original lid is no longer present. Today, it makes a striking decorative vessel, utensil crock, brush holder or small vase.

The surface displays glaze variation, firing marks, deposits and wear consistent with its age and traditional production. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition.
