An extraordinary example of 19th-century natural history illustration, this hand-colored lithograph features two stunning Birds of Paradise, captured in exquisite detail by renowned French artist Édouard Traviès, engraved by Christophe Annedouche, and published by the distinguished J.J. Dubochet et Compagnie in Paris.

Dating from the 1840s–1850s, this rare original lithograph portrays two Birds of Paradise amid tropical foliage, one mid-flight with magnificent trailing plumes, the other perched gracefully. Édouard Traviès was celebrated for his remarkable accuracy and artistry in depicting exotic species, while Annedouche’s engraving work faithfully translated the original drawings into fine lithographs.

The print is beautifully hand-colored, with rich, vivid tones that have aged gracefully. It is marked with the names of the artist, engraver, and publisher, certifying its authenticity and fine provenance. This lithograph was likely created for major works such as Le Jardin des Plantes or Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, masterpieces of French natural history publishing.
